Water polo is a fast-paced sport that involves two opposing teams who try to throw their ball into the opponents' goal in order to earn points. Essentially, it combines many of the concepts and techniques found in basketball, hockey, rugby and soccer, but is played in a pool and requires that each player is a proficient swimmer and overall athlete. Depending on the individual, a player can burn up to 930 calories in just one hour of practicing or playing water polo.

Calories Burned

Nutristrategy.com explains that in one 60-minute session, an individual who weighs 130 lbs. can burn 590 calories playing water polo. A 155-lb. individual can burn 704 calories, while an individual who weighs 180 lbs. can burn 817 calories, and a 205-lb. individual can burn 931 calories.

Variables

The amount of calories burned during a session of water polo will vary from person to person. Some factors that may influence your caloric output include age, sex, weight, total muscle mass and metabolism, exercise intensity and duration, as well as the position you play on the team. To increase the number of calories you burn during water polo, extend the duration and intensity of your workout.

Benefits

Water polo is a challenging cardio activity that can strengthen the cardiovascular system and increase physical stamina. The body's legs are constantly in motion during the game in order to keep the player afloat, constantly making the heart pump and engaging the entire body. Constant twisting, turning and ball-throwing strengthen the leg and arm muscles, as well as the core muscles. In one game of water polo alone, a player can swim up to four miles; therefore endurance plays a major part in the sport. Additionally, the agility and quick movements required during water polo can improve a player's flexibility and muscular length.

Considerations

To reduce your risk of injury, speak with your doctor before beginning a new exercise program or sport. Water polo is a physically demanding sport that requires previously learned skills and technique, speed, conditioning and endurance and proficiency in swimming.

You will be more likely to maintain or lose weight by living an active lifestyle in conjunction with eating a nutritious and balanced diet that fits within your caloric needs. In addition, drink plenty of water each day, get adequate rest each night and manage the stress factors that may be present in your life.
