Carrying excess body weight is as detrimental to teens as it is for adults, affecting both health and self-esteem. When trying to help your teen lose weight, it is important to find the right diet. Teens are still growing and need to make healthy food choices to nourish their bodies for continued growth and development. Online weight loss programs may be a good choice for shy teens or teens who just enjoy spending time on the computer or smart phone.

That-a-Weigh Kids

That-a-Weigh Kids is an online diet program designed by pediatrician Dr. Wendy V. Sapolsky. The program charges a one time fee to join that is good for 12 months. That-a-Weigh Kids helps teens get to a healthier weight by teaching them how to make healthier food choices. The plan includes an easy-to-follow color coded food chart, an online food diary with a calorie calculator and weekly weigh-ins. The plan also offers email and phone support to answer questions.

Calories Count

Calorie Count is free online weight loss program. However, it is not designed specifically for teens, and should only be followed under your supervision and the recommendation of your teen's physician. Calories Count provides your teen with her daily calorie needs to reach her weight goals. The plan also provides a food log and activity log so she can track how many calories she eats and how many she burns. The site also provides menus and shopping lists to make it easier for you and your teen to plan meals.

EDiets

EDiets is another online weight loss program that can help your teen lose weight. Like That-a-Weigh Kids, eDiets is not free. EDiets is also not specifically designed for teens, but you and your teen have access to registered dietitians and fitness experts to help guide you. The eDiets online plan includes a personalized diet based on your teen's current weight, weight loss goals and food preferences. The plan offers shopping lists, recipes and weight management tools.

USDA MyPlate

The U.S. Department of Agriculture also has a free online program that your teen can use to help him learn about healthy eating to get to a better weight. The plan includes recommended daily calorie intake, along with serving suggestions from each of the food groups based on the MyPlate and dietary guidelines. The website also offers a food tracker and activity assessment tool so your teen can track his daily calorie intake and expenditure.
