How to Do Capoeira Backflips

Backflips are one of the notable moves associated with capoeira, a Brazilian martial art. Capoeira martial artists frequently do backflips into the ring, showing off their skills as a fighter and gymnast. The concepts behind the execution of a backflip are simple, but they require considerable time and practice. Train on padded mats with spotters to prevent injury. Practice backflips only under the supervision and direction of professional instructors.

Step 1

Place your left leg behind you. Bend your knees and swing your arms down, using the timing and momentum of your arms to provide power for your backflip.

Step 2

Rotate your hips upward and arch your back. This will pull up your knees. The rate at which you rotate your hips determines the speed of your backflip.

Step 3

Pull back your arms and keep them tightly next to your sides.

Step 4

Arch your neck back. Straighten your legs as soon as the mat comes into your line of vision.

Step 5

Land on the balls of your feet with your knees bent, spine straight and hips tucked underneath you.
