Korean red ginseng and yohimbine are both herbal extracts that are purported to have athletic benefits. While some research does support benefits of ginseng and yohimbine supplementation, there is also evidence suggesting that there are potential drawbacks to both. Combining Korean red ginseng and yohimbine may cause a higher risk of side effects than either supplement poses alone. Consult a doctor prior to using any supplements.
Difficulty Sleeping
As the University of Maryland Medical Center explains, Korean ginseng, also known as Asian, ginseng may be beneficial for promoting endurance, although research results are mixed. The endurance effects come from ginseng's stimulant properties, which can also be a drawback. According to the center, insomnia and restlessness are known side effects of Korean ginseng. Additionally, yohimbine is another stimulant, so it may cause insomnia, as well.
Anxiety
Korean ginseng and yohimbine are often used for improving your physical health -- fat burning and improved athletic performance are purported benefits -- but they may also have psychological effects. Unfortunately, these effects can be detrimental. Both Korean ginseng and yohimbine may cause anxiety or feelings of nervousness. If you already suffer from these feelings, these supplements may worsen your condition.
Coma
Although perhaps not as likely as other side effects, a coma is a possible adverse effect of a combination of Korean red ginseng and yohimbine. According to a report from the September 2009 issue of "Clinical Toxicology," high levels of yohimbine can cause a comatose state. Additionally, Korean red ginseng can cause low blood sugar, which can cause a diabetic coma.
Gastrointestinal Issues
Supplementation of Korean red ginseng and yohimibine may also cause adverse affects involving your digestive, or gastrointestinal, system. Yohimbine is known to cause feelings of nausea, while Korean red ginseng may cause vomiting.
Increased Blood Pressure
Using Korean red ginseng and yohimbine may also cause you to experience high blood pressure. Both of these ingredients are associated with increased blood pressure, and exercising also increases your blood pressure, making the combination dangerous when used for athletic benefits. High blood pressure can cause headache, irregular heartbeat, fatigue and confusion. Chronic high blood pressure can lead to heart attack, stroke and other cardiovascular side effects.
