In homeopathy, Ignatia amara commonly treats grief, anxiety, nervousness, depression and sadness. Homeopathy derives from a "law of similars" -- the theory that micro-doses of a substance that causes a condition can alleviate that condition. Homeopathy addresses mental and emotional problems as well as physical illnesses. Ignatia amara comes from the St. Ignatius bean. Using this remedy for underlying causes of emotional eating, overeating and stress may make it easier to stick to a diet and make lifestyle changes that promote a healthy weight. As with any remedy, talk to your doctor before taking Ignatia amara.

Step 1

Chew two Ignatia amara tablets 30 minutes before breakfast, in accordance with the label dosage instructions. Chew the tablets thoroughly so the remedy dissolves. It isn't necessary to take water with the tablets. Having your first dose before you eat gives the remedy time to relieve sadness or anxiety that can lead to overeating. Eat breakfast slowly to give your body time to register when you've had enough to eat.

Step 2

Take a second dose of Ignatia amara 30 minutes before lunch. Taking time to chew your food thoroughly helps digestion and increases your ability to sense when you become full before you consume more calories than you need.

Step 3

Chew the third single dose of Ignatia amara tablets 30 minutes before dinner. Taking deep breaths and consciously setting aside the stresses of the day can help you stay focused on your diet goals. Eating dinner without distractions can support your use of Ignatia amara for your diet success. For example, listen to soothing music and leave the TV off during dinner.

Tips and Warnings

  • Ignatia amara substantially improved menopause-related physical and emotional disturbances in more than 95 percent of the participants in a study by researchers from Poland's Medical Centre for Postgraduate Education. The researchers published their findings in the January 2004 issue of "Science and Engineering Ethics." The treatment may have a lower risk of side effects than standard pharmaceuticals, but further research is required. Certain homeopathic Ignatia amara formulas may call for a different dose. For example, Ignatia amara in pellet form may require a dose of four pellets. Regular aerobic exercise, such as a brisk walk, helps to reduce stress and helps your body become more efficient at burning calories for successful dieting.
  • Do not exceed the recommended dose. Homeopathy is based on using minute amounts of a substance. There's no benefit to increasing the dose, and taking too much may negate the treatment.
