Competing in the high jump requires you to be aware of where your body is in the air at all times, which is much more difficult in a layout position with your back to the ground. When first learning to jump, you may think you are arching your back, when in fact you are dropping your bottom in mid flight, hitting the bar. Learning to pick a landing spot on the mat as you begin to clear the bar can help your body arch over the bar.

Step 1

Approach the bar, accelerating your run as you come closer to your takeoff position. Lean away from the high bar as you begin your takeoff.

Step 2

Pull your body over the bar by swinging your arms over your head as you push off the ground with your lead leg. To begin the arch, start twisting your body over the bar while in a layout position in the air.

Step 3

Tuck your chin down to the shoulder that clears the bar first. Look down at the mat as you begin to bring your arms down toward your sides. Tucking the chin and looking at a fixed position on the mat helps you arch your back while in flight.

Step 4

Lift your head after your bottom clears the bar. This completes the arch of your legs and feet over the bar.
