Avocados provide a bevy of vitamins and nutrients, including vitamin E, potassium, folate, magnesium and omega-3 fatty acids. Since avocados are easily accessible, they make for a nutritious addition to sandwiches and salads. Avocados are so easy to cut that you needn't even take out your cutting board to access its creamy flesh.

Step 1

Hold the avocado in your non-dominant hand. Insert the tip of a paring knife into the top of the avocado and press until your knife meets the pit inside.

Step 2

Slice the avocado in one continuous round, rotating the avocado in your hand as you hold the knife in place. Allow the pit inside to be your guide for depth.

Step 3

Twist the cut halves until they separate and pull them apart. One halve will have the pit, while one will only have flesh. Insert the broad side of the knife into the pit and twist, freeing it from the avocado flesh. Discard the pit.

Step 4

Hold a half avocado in your non-dominant palm. Insert the paring knife into the flesh at the top of the avocado and carefully drag the blade downward lengthwise. Do not pierce the skin. Continue the process until you've cut the flesh into visible strips. If you prefer chopped avocado, repeat the process but cut width-wise.

Step 5

Turn the avocado over and gently press on the skin to effectively turn the avocado inside-out. The cut avocado will fall directly to the counter. If some slices are still attached to the skin, use a spoon to gently scrape the avocado away from the skin. Repeat the process on the other half.

Tips and Warnings

  • Brush the avocado with lemon or lime juice to prevent browning because of oxidization.
