Water is a necessary component in the world of weight loss. In addition to exercise and a healthy diet, water will help keep your body functioning properly and encouraging weight loss in a variety of ways. While six glasses is a great amount to aim for, it may not be the right amount for your body. How much water you should consume is based on your activity level, weight, environment and diet.

Dehydration

When you first begin to lose weight, it is largely due to water loss. You must drink enough water to avoid dehydration while this occurs. Becoming dehydrated can lead to water retention and temporary weight gain. Dehydration also reduces your blood volume, which reduces the oxygen supply to your muscles, according to the Calories per Hour website. A reduced oxygen supply can leave you feeling tired and sluggish.

Weight Loss

If you are looking to lose weight, you are likely burning calories through your workouts. The process of burning calories requires an adequate amount of water. A lack of water can slow the fat-burning process. Burning calories also creates toxins in your body, which water helps flush out.

Water and Your Diet

A weight-loss diet typically includes fiber to aid in your digestive system and help keep you full. Too much fiber, however, can lead to constipation. The proper amount of fluids is necessary to help eliminate the fiber and keep it moving through your body. Drinking water during your meals can help keep your stomach full, leaving you less likely to overeat and more likely to lose weight.

How Much Water to Drink

If you eat a lot of water-based foods, which most fruits and vegetables are, you may not need to drink as much water as someone who doesn't eat them. If you are heavier, your body will need more fluids. If you live in a hot, humid environment, you will sweat more and need to replenish your fluids more. Similarly, if you exercise often and sweat a lot during your workouts, you will need even more water. How much you should drink per day depends on many factors, but only six glasses per day might be cutting it short. If your urine is pale yellow to clear, then you are properly hydrated. If it is bright yellow or dark, then you should consume more. As a general rule of thumb, the Mayo Clinic suggests drinking eight 8 oz. glasses throughout the day.
