Hydroxycut Hardcore is a product that was marketed by MuscleTech Inc. as a weight loss product. It was taken off the shelf, along with other Hydroxycut products, in 2009 in response to a U.S. Food and Drug Administration warning about possible side effects. It is no longer available on MuscleTech's website, but a newer, reformulated weight loss product called Hydroxycut Hardcore Pro Series has taken its place as of July 2011.

Claims

Hydroxycut Hardcore contained ingredients that were intended to help you metabolize fat more efficiently and increase your muscle definition. Its main demographic was bodybuilders, but the product could have been used by anyone wishing to lose weight. MuscleTech claimed it could decrease your body fat by 7.9 percent and increase norepinephrine by 40 percent. Norepinephrine is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands that acts primarily as a stimulating agent in times of stress; it can also help the body use stored fat as an energy source.

Ingredients

Hydroxycut Hardcore was divided into three blends: The Norepidrol Intensity Focus Blend, the Lasidrate Delivery Blend and and the Proxyclene Fat Loss Blend. All of them were purported to help with weight loss, but in slightly different ways. The three proprietary blends shared some similar ingredients, including a Yohimacore Yohimbine blend, which is a stimulant, sesame oil and various food-coloring agents and gels that made up the shell of the pill. The Norepidrol Intensity Focus Blend included deanol acetamidobenzoate hydrogen, xanthinol nicotinate, evodia extract, inula racemosa extract and codonopsis pilosula extract. The Lasidrate Delivery Blend contained troxerutin, inositol, cnidium monnieri extract and black pepper extract; the Proxyclene Fat Loss Blend had caffeine anhydrous -- which delivered 280 mg of caffeine -- green tea extract, white willow extract and aspidosperma quebracho-blanco extract.

Effectiveness

MuscleTech Inc. claimed Hydroxycut Hardcore was tested in studies, which were the sources of their statistics regarding fat loss and increased fat-burning capability; however, none of the ingredients that it contained have been definitively shown to reduce fat in any studies available to the public. According to the website BodyBuilding.com, one of the ingredients, Evodia rutaecarpa extract, was shown to reduce fat in mice. The original formula is no longer available, so there is no longer a way to study it further.

Side Effects

The side effects of Hydroxycut Hardcore were largely the result of the stimulants that it contained, including yohimbe and caffeine. Possible side effects included headaches, increased blood pressure, increased heart rate, anxiety, shaking, nausea and restlessness. The FDA issued a warning in May 2009 that urged consumers to discontinue using several Hydroxycut Products, including Hydroxycut Hardcore, because of reports of liver damage. The reports included one death in 2007. In response to the FDA warming, Hydroxycut Hardcore was recalled by the manufacturer along with other Hydroxycut products.

Current Form

Hydroxycut Hardcore was reformulated to Hydroxycut Hardcore X several months after the 2009 recall. The current incarnation as of July 2011 is called Hydroxycut Hardcore Pro Series. It has few of the ingredients of the original formula with the exception of caffeine anhydrous. It is available only in one blend and purports to boost fat loss when combined with a low-calorie diet. If you choose to take Hydroxycut Hardcore Pro Series, consult your physician first.
