Participation in sports and regular exercise in general have far-reaching benefits. Getting kids involved in physical activity when they are young can transition to a lifelong pattern of fitness. Even if you are older and weren't involved in sports as a child, it's never too late to get started moving your body and reaping the benefits that regular activity brings.

Physical Benefits

The physical benefits of exercise and sports are evident on the inside and outside of your body. Physical exercise helps you to maintain a healthy weight, strengthens your muscles, improves flexibility and builds an efficient cardiovascular system. All of these benefits contribute to the larger benefit of helping to prevent ailments such as diabetes, arthritis, heart disease and stroke. Exercise also has an anti-aging effect on your appearance that will help to keep you looking younger than your age.

Mental Benefits

Psychologically, exercise and sports can help your short-term mood and help mold your long-term personality traits. When you exercise, chemicals called endorphins are released in your brain that give you a sense of well-being and sometimes even euphoria. Your self-esteem will also receive a boost as your appearance changes and you start to feel better overall, says the Mayo Clinic. Increased confidence spills over to other areas of your life and may help you professionally or in your personal relationships.

Teamwork

Participating in team sports is an effective way for a child or adult to practice the concept of teamwork and have his own ego forced to into the background. Learning to put the team first and sacrifice for a greater good is usually a sought-after trait in the workplace, and playing a team sport can give kids a head start, learning and practicing traits that will serve them well in the future.

Friendship

You're going to meet other people when you participate in sports. You will get along with some better than others, but friendships are often formed as you compete together with people who share the same interests as you. Even if a team sport isn't your idea of fun, activities such as martial arts, running clubs or golf leagues can get you connected to people who want to do the same things in their leisure time.
