5 Things You Need to Know About Living with Asthma

1. Be Aware of Allergens

Allergens are the number one trigger of an asthma attack. Common allergens are pets, dust, feathers, chemicals and pollen. If you have asthma, you should keep your house free from dust by dusting it every other day. Do not have pets in your home that you know will trigger your allergies. Clean every room of your house weekly. When pollen counts are high, you may want to wear a mask outdoors or avoid going outside.

2. Asthma in the Bedroom

There are some things you can do in your bedroom to lower your chances of having an allergy attack while you sleep. Wash your bed covers once a week in hot water. This will help to eliminate dust mites. If you have carpet in your bedroom, sweep it weekly with a sweeper that contains a hepa filter. Having hard wood floors in the bedroom is the best way to keep allergens from coming up from the carpet. Use a dehumidifier in the bedroom to keep the moisture low.

3. Asthma in the Bathroom

Mold and mildew are both sensitive triggers of asthma. Many people have mold and mildew inside their bathtub, shower and other places around the bathroom. You should clean the mold and mildew with a good cleaner after each time you use the bathroom. You should always keep your bathroom well ventilated because mold and mildew grow better when air is not circulating. Use a fan or open the windows.

4. Asthma in the Kitchen

Believe it or not, bugs can trigger an asthma attack. Bugs such as ants, cockroaches and moths can live around your kitchen and cause you to have an asthma attack. Therefore, you should always keep your kitchen very clean and free of bugs. Throw away old food and never leave food out. Kitchens also have mold and mildew, so you should clean your kitchen and get rid of anything producing mold and mildew.

5. Asthma in the Living Room

The living room is one of the most likely areas to have an asthma attack because of the possible dust, pollen, smoke and pet dander that may be present. In order to prevent an asthma attack in the living room, you should dust the furniture and run the sweeper weekly. Do not allow smoking in your house. You should also launder your curtains once a month and do not use heavy perfumes or room deodorizers in the room.
