Speed skating is an intense cardiovascular exercise that requires lower body and core strength as well as endurance to excel. Finding exercise routines for speed skaters can present a challenge, especially in rural areas where the choice of rinks and support may be limited. However, these routines will strengthen needed muscles and build on the athlete's power and stamina. Take the time to research speed skating routines in your area for maximum performance at the rink.
Step 1
Get to the local ice or roller rink. Most rinks have specific times for speed skating, so call ahead to make sure you go when your peers are present. Ask those present about routines, special training sessions or local resources for speed skaters.
Step 2
Look for instructional DVDs on speed skating exercise routines. The Markham Speed Skating Club of Ontario, Canada, produces a DVD with specialized exercises for speed. You could also choose DVDs from professional skaters, such as the Ellis Method by champion trainer Ellis Edge or the Robby Glantz International Power Skaters DVD.
Step 3
Call speed skating clubs within your geographical area. You may have to drive to find one, as not every rink hosts a speed skater's club. If you are a serious skater, you may be able to join a club and borrow its exercise routines.
Step 4
Research the experts online. Former Olympian champs as well as personal trainers have outlined speed skating routines in an online format. Some routines are free, whereas others must be purchased; it is up to you how much time and money to invest in your skating.
