Packed with omega-3 fatty acids, protein and vitamin D, salmon is a healthy dinner that's simple to cook at home. Full of flavor, but low in saturated fat, salmon is a good low-calorie entree for health conscious cooks. There are many methods for preparing salmon, and cooking it at home gives you the flexibility to personalize your meal with herbs and seasonings geared to your taste.

Grilled

Step 1

Light your gas or charcoal grill and brush a salmon filet lightly with olive oil and lemon juice.

Step 2

Place the fish on the edge of the grill so it will cook over indirect heat instead of the hottest coals.

Step 3

When you begin to see grill marks forming on the filet, flip the fish and continue cooking until the whole filet is cooked throughout.

Steamed

Step 1

Rub the salmon filet with spices, chopped herbs and ginger and garlic.

Step 2

Place the fish into the bottom of a bamboo steamer or a folding steamer basket.

Step 3

Fill a saucepan with 2 inches of water and place the pan on the stove over medium-high heat.

Step 4

Bring the water to a boil and place the steamer basket in the pot.

Step 5

Cover the pot and steamer and cook for 10 minutes until the fish is cooked.

Broiled

Step 1

Marinate your salmon fllet with olive oil, spices and lemon juice, as desired.

Step 2

Line a broiler pan with a piece of aluminum foil and preheat the broiler.

Step 3

Place the fish on the broiler pan and cook the filet for 5 minutes.

Step 4

Flip the fllet and cook an additional 5 minutes. The fish is done cooking when it flakes easily with a fork.

Poached

Step 1

Heat a mixture of white wine and water, or vegetable broth in a large nonstick skillet.

Step 2

Place the salmon filet into the liquid and season with herbs and butter as desired.

Step 3

Bring the liquid to a slow boil, then reduce the heat and cook the fish for 10 to 15 minutes, until firm.

Tips and Warnings

  • Lemon, dill and chives are popular salmon accompaniments. Red pepper flakes, hot sauce and chilies add heat.
