Fish oil gelcaps provide omega-3 fatty acids, an essential nutrient that you probably don't eat in sufficient amounts. However, fish oil supplements can cause gas, belching and other stomach problems. Your body has problems processing large amounts of oil taken by itself. A few tricks can prevent the dreaded fish burps when taking fish oil supplements.
Step 1
Take the fish oil gelcap with a meal or a snack containing other foods, particularly ones containing fat. The fish oil will be able to be more easily mixed with the other food and reduce stomach upset.
Step 2
Spread your supplementation throughout the day. If you are taking more than one fish oil gelcap per day, take one with each meal. Taking large amounts of fish oil at once will increase stomach upset and gas.
Step 3
Choose a fish oil supplement with an enteric coating. An enteric coating is a specially formulated gel cap that will not dissolve in your stomach, but will in your small intestines, where your body absorbs nutrients. These supplements may also be marketed as burpless or low gas.
Step 4
Avoid taking fish oil supplements with other food that causes you stomach upset. Although they vary from person to person, these foods may include spicy, greasy foods and carbonated beverages.
