Preparing to head to the hospital for the birth of your baby involves more than just getting into the car and getting admitted. You have to plan ahead and pack the items you, your baby and your labor coach will need while you are at the hospital. You also have to bring the items you will need to bring your baby home. Some of the items are based on your personal preference and the requirements of the hospital, but many items are standard.

Step 1

Include supplies you may want during your labor and delivery. A camera, soothing music, a book, massaging supplies, snacks for your labor coach, an outfit for your labor coach, and any focal items to help you through labor are some ideas about what should be included in your labor bag. You should also pack a bikini top or shirt if you are planning on a water birth. You can bring the bikini bottom if you want, but you will only be able to wear it up until delivery. Many hospitals offer free wireless Internet connection, so bring your laptop if desired.

Step 2

Pack your clothing. While most hospitals provide a hospital gown for the birth, you will likely want to wear your own clothes after. Be sure that you pack maternity clothing, as you will still have a prominent belly after you have your baby. If you plan to breastfeed your baby, be sure that the tops you pack can accommodate that. Shirts, bottoms, underwear, a bra, night clothes, socks and shoes are essential. You can also pack a robe just in case you are expecting visitors and don't feel up to getting dressed.

Step 3

Include toiletries. Some hospitals provide basic toiletries, but you may want to bring your own. Shampoo, conditioner, a brush, soap or body wash, a razor, shaving cream, toothpaste, toothbrush, lip moisturizer and lotion are some of the things you can pack. If you want, you can pack makeup and hair styling supplies.

Step 4

Bring baby supplies. Your baby will need an outfit to go home in, and she will also need a blanket for the ride home. Be sure that the items you pack are appropriate for the weather in your area. Also, you should contact the hospital to verify that diapers, wipes, shirts, blankets and baby wash are provided. If they are, you don't need to worry about bringing those, but if they aren't provided, bring your own. The same goes for a pacifier, bottles, nipples and formula if you are formula feeding or supplemental feeding your baby.

Step 5

Add lactation supplies if you plan on breastfeeding. Breast pads, a nursing bra and a pump are some items you may need.

Step 6

Install the baby's car seat. Federal law requires that all newborns leaving the hospital be secured in an approved car seat. If you are unsure of how to install the car seat in your vehicle, check with the local fire department to find out if they can install the seat for you.

Tips and Warnings
