How to Determine How Many Calories Your Metabolism Burns

The number of calories your metabolism burns is called the basal metabolic rate, or BMR. The rate indicates calories burned when you are at rest and without external influences such as metabolism-boosting supplements. This number varies by individual. To get your exact BMR, you need a special machine that measures the amount of oxygen you use at rest. These machines are not readily available to the public, but you can calculate your BMR based on your weight in pounds and your height in inches.

BMR Calculation for Men

Step 1

Multiply your weight in pounds by 6.23. Multiply your height in inches by 12.7. Multiply your age in years by 6.8. Example: 120 lbs. x 6.23 = 747.6, 62 inches x 12.7 = 787.4, 25 years x 6.8 = 170.

Step 2

Add the result of your weight and height calculations together, then add 66: 747.6 + 787.4 + 66 = 1601.

Step 3

Subtract the result of your age calculation to determine how many calories your metabolism burns: 1601 -- 170 = 1431 calories.

BMR Calculation for Women

Step 1

Multiply your weight in pounds by 4.35. Multiply your height in inches by 4.7. Multiply your age in years by 4.7. Example: 120 lbs. x 4.35 = 522, 62 inches x 4.7 = 291.4, 25 years x 4.7 = 117.5.

Step 2

Add the result of your weight and height calculations together, then add 655: 522 + 291.4 + 655 = 1468.4.

Step 3

Subtract the result of your age calculation to determine how many calories your metabolism burns: 1468.4 -- 117.5 = 1350.9 calories.
