Boxing is a chess match. You can fight a perfect fight if you have a longer reach than your opponent, stay on the outside and rip off left jab after left jab. This will enable you to pile up points without putting yourself at risk. But few fights go that way. You want to deliver powerful punches and avoid your opponent's. To get inside, you may have to leave yourself at risk for an instant before delivering a combination that can give you control of the fight.
Step 1
Move around the ring consistently. If you are a right-handed fighter, you will want to circle your opponent to the left. As you circle, you will regularly snap off your left jab. When you can throw and land the jab cleanly, your opponent's head will snap back. This will allow you to step inside and launch combinations. Your opponent can't hurt you when his head is snapping back. Move, jab and launch the inside attack
Step 2
Goad your opponent into throwing a hard jab at you. If you are not directly in front of him, you will be able to use head movement to make him miss with the jab or barely touch you with a glancing blow. The instant you know he is going to miss, close the ground and step inside and throw a quick 1-2 combination. Then step back outside and begin the process again.
Step 3
Throw your left jab to a spot where your opponent is not prepared to handle it. Your opponent will have his right hand up by his chin to protect his head. Feint the jab to the jaw and deliver that blow to the rib cage. If you get the punch through, this will stun your opponent. Immediately fire a left hook and then step in and throw your right cross. This will allow you to get inside and potentially seize control of the fight.
Step 4
Develop a swarming style. Swarmers are the most aggressive fighters and will absorb one or two punches just so they can deliver their own blows. Swarmers sacrifice defense for offense. It's difficult for a boxer to suddenly become a swarmer, but if you can employ that strategy from time to time you can get inside and punish your opponent.
