Gastroenteritis is the medical term used to describe the condition more commonly called the stomach flu or a stomach bug. The viral infection affects the stomach and intestines, with symptoms including diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pains and general aches. The illness often leaves you feeling weak and lacking strength. As the uncomfortable effects of the stomach bug begin to disappear, you may begin thinking about regaining your strength. The way you care for yourself is a determining factor in how quickly you get your energy back.
Step 1
Sleep as much as possible during the stomach bug and after you begin feeling better. Avoid strenuous activity that can drain your energy before you get it back fully.
Step 2
Drink sports drinks that supply carbohydrates and hydrate your body. Sip small amounts if you are still vomiting. Increase the amount of sports drink the longer you go without vomiting to decrease the chances of dehydration, which contributes to body weakness.
Step 3
Eat bland foods as soon as you body will keep it down. You need the fuel from food to give your body energy. Start with food like saltine crackers, plain toast and bananas that are less likely to upset your stomach.
Step 4
Add more food to your plate as you gain strength and continue feeling better. Avoid fatty, spicy or caffeinated foods that might cause more digestive problems. Try one food at a time to make sure it doesn't cause problems.
Step 5
Move around to get some light exercise, avoiding any strenuous workouts. Try a short walk around the block, a slow bike ride or gentle weight training at home. Stop the exercise if you begin feeling sick.
Step 6
Resume your regular activities slowly to avoid overdoing it. Too much activity too quickly may cause you to feel more exhausted than before.
