How to Treat Blisters From Gymnastics Bars

The friction caused by using gymnastics bars repetitively can result in blisters on your hands. Although a fairly minor injury, blisters can become a serious health issue if they break open, leaving you with an open wound prone to infection. Proper treatment of the blisters reduces your risk of infection. Consult your health care provider if you have questions about treating your blisters at home.

Step 1

Wash your hands gently with soap and water. Pat your hands dry gently with a towel. Be careful not to rupture your blisters.

Step 2

Squeeze triple antibiotic ointment over your blisters to prevent infection in the event of a blister rupturing. Gently smear the ointment over the entire surface of the blisters with cotton swabs.

Step 3

Place nonstick bandages over the blisters. Wrap gauze around your hand several times to keep the bandages in place. Tape gauze to itself with medical tape to keep the gauze in place.

Step 4

Cut away the gauze with a pair of scissors daily or when the bandage becomes wet or soiled, whichever comes first. Use the scissors on the portion of the gauze covering the top of your hand to prevent applying pressure from the scissors to your blisters and rupturing them. Peel away the nonstick bandages.

Step 5

Repeat this process until your blisters heal completely.
