Probiotic yogurt contains microorganisms, commonly called friendly bacteria, that can aid digestion. Many people consume such bacteria to treat diarrhea, prevent yeast infections and aid digestion. Harvard Medical School even cites studies showing that probiotics can be helpful in delaying allergies in children. Many yogurts contain probiotics. Including this kind of yogurt in a smoothie is a great way to increase your consumption of friendly bacteria that can help your digestive system work better.
Step 1
Choose a liquid for your smoothie. Low-fat milk will make your smoothie taste purely blueberry. Fruit juice, such as orange juice, can add more healthy nutrients and combine well with the blueberry.
Step 2
Pick the flavor yogurt you will use. Plain or vanilla will help maintain the pure blueberry flavor.
Step 3
Use fresh blueberries for the greatest health benefits. Frozen berries, however, are an acceptable substitute.
Step 4
Add the milk or juice, yogurt, berries and honey to a blender. Blend until all ingredients are incorporated.
Tips and Warnings
- Consider Greek yogurt with probiotics for use in your smoothie. It has less fat, fewer calories and twice the protein of regular yogurt.
- Read the label on your yogurt carefully to make sure that your yogurt contains live microorganisms. Discuss the benefits of probiotic yogurt with your family doctor, particularly before adding it to your children's diet.
