Finely minced garlic releases more oil than when you chop or slice it, making it ideal for flavoring oils when sauteing. However, achieving a fine mince is slightly difficult if you don't use the right kind of knife and know how to position and move the knife correctly. Garlic, known not only for its ability to add flavor to a variety of dishes, is also used as a dietary supplement that is heart-healthy and thought to provide some prevention against some colon and stomach cancers, according to doctors at the National Cancer Institute. These are just a few reasons as to why you should learn to mince garlic for use in your dishes.

Step 1

Place the peeled garlic clove on top of a clean and dry cutting board.

Step 2

Cut the garlic clove from the top to the bottom with a sharp, clean paring knife. Slice the clove into several long, thin slices.

Step 3

Dice the long slices crosswise with the paring knife into small pieces.

Step 4

Pile the small pieces of garlic together.

Step 5

Hold a chef's knife with one hand and place the other hand flat over the top of the blade.

Step 6

Rock the knife back and forth across the garlic pieces while swiveling the blade until the pieces are finely minced.
