Frequent urination, or a sudden intense desire, to urinate is often a symptom of a urinary tract infection, or UTI, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Marshmallow root tea may be beneficial in reducing the need to urinate frequently if the problem is the result of a UTI. Frequent urination, however, may be the result of an underlying disorder, such as diabetes, a prostrate problem, stroke or one of many other serious disorders, so see your doctor if symptoms persist or if you have additional symptoms.

Marshmallow Root

Marshmallow root, or Althaea officinalis, contains mucilages, which may be responsible for the herb's effect on the urinary tract, according to the "PDR for Herbal Medicines." The herb also contains pectin, fatty acids, lecithin, sucrose and other constituents. Marshmallow root has an anti-inflammatory and an anti-irritant effect on mucus membranes, including the bladder and urinary tract.

Potential Benefits

If you have a UTI, bladder inflammation can reduce the amount of urine your bladder comfortably holds, which may make it feel as if you need to urinate frequently. Drinking marshmallow root tea may reduce bladder inflammation and soothe irritated urinary tract membranes, according to the "PDR." Studies confirming this benefit, however, are lacking.

Method

The "Gale Encyclopedia of Alternative Medicine" suggests making marshmallow root decoction, which is simply a boiled tea. Add 2 tsp. of chopped marshmallow root to 1 cup of water in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Simmer for 15 minutes, and then allow the liquid to cool before straining. Drink one cup up to three times per day.

Considerations

Marshmallow root may affect blood sugar levels and interfere with drugs used to treat diabetes and other blood sugar disorders. Other than that, the "Gale Encyclopedia" reports that there are no additional adverse effects, although that may be due, in part, to a lack of scientific research. Marshmallow root is probably safe in low doses for children, but consult your doctor, just to be on the safe side, before giving this herbal remedy to a child. Marshmallow root tea may not be beneficial in treating frequent urination that stems from other medical conditions. Talk to your doctor about your symptoms before self-treating with herbal remedies.
