The accuracy of your punch may be more instrumental than the velocity of your fist when it comes to knocking out your opponent. This might surprise anyone who has seen legendary heavyweights like Joe Frazier, George Foreman or Mike Tyson fire bombs in old highlight films. But striking accurately can punish your opponent and allow you to take control of the fight. Try to increase your accuracy while training.

Step 1

Hit the speed bag every day while training. You use the speed bag primarily to improve your quickness and hand speed, but it also is a vital tool when you goal is accuracy. When you strike the speed bag with precision, it will hit the supporting backboard and come straight back at you. If you don't hit the center of the bag, it will not fly straight back at you. Concentrate on hitting the speed bag in the center of its widest portion. This will help your punching accuracy.

Step 2

Wear focus mitts when training to build punching precision. Trainers wear them to give you a specific target area to punch. Every time you throw a punch, your trainer will move his hands. This makes them difficult to hit squarely. The more familiar you get with the exercise, the faster your trainer will move his hands. This builds effective punching accuracy.

Step 3

Hit the floor-to-ceiling bag -- also known as the double-end bag -- to increase your accuracy. This is one of the most effective tools for hitting your target because it does not behave in a predictable manner. The floor-to-ceiling bag is hung on a long elastic, and hitting it effectively takes maximum concentration and precision with your punches. Once you have built up momentum on the speed bag, move to this bag to increase accuracy.

Step 4

Spar with an opponent of similar size and experience. When you can hit the speed bag for three minutes at a time, you have developed some ability to throw accurate punches. However, no matter how well you have done on the speed bag, the heavy bag or shadow boxing, you have to test yourself against a live opponent. If you can throw a crisp left jab to the chin or a right uppercut to the solar plexus, you are showing signs that you will become an accurate puncher.
