Ginger is a widely cultivated tropical herb with the scientific name Zingiber officinalis. It is used in both cooking and natural healing. The turnip-like root of ginger, called rhizome, is used medicinally. In Chinese medicine, fresh ginger is used to treat diarrhea and various other health problems. Fresh ginger possesses some undesirable properties as well. As a precaution, check with your doctor before using fresh ginger or any other herbal product.

Ginger and Diarrhea

Fresh ginger can be eaten for its anti-diarrheal properties. Diarrhea is often caused by poor digestion due to stagnation and accumulation of undigested foods in the bowel movement. Fresh ginger strengthens the stomach and reduces food stagnation, thereby reducing or eliminating diarrhea.

Ginger and Intestinal Enzymes

Diarrhea can be caused by an enzyme deficiency. Your pancreas produces enzymes that aid in the digestion process. Eating ginger stimulates intestinal enzyme activity, thereby reducing diarrhea, says Chrystle Fiedler, an herbal medicine specialist and the author of the book "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Natural Remedies." In addition, fresh ginger can kill those germs in your stomach that cause diarrhea.

Other Medicinal Uses

Ginger helps reduce nausea and vomiting caused by pregnancy and chemotherapy, the University of Maryland Medical Center reports. Some studies have also linked ginger consumption with beneficial effects in heart disease, as well as in the treatment and prevention of cancer. As with any therapy, talk to your doctor before using ginger supplements.

Side Effects

You may experience side effects from taking ginger. It is not recommended for people with gallstones because ginger has the potential to worsen gallstone symptoms. If you are being treated for diabetes, do not consume ginger without first talking to your doctor, as ginger might interfere with the absorption of diabetic medications.
