Pro boarders spend years perfecting even the most elementary of aerial jumps. Losing control in the air for a brief moment can result in bone-crunching falls. When practicing a big jump, use a ramp that features a landing covered in powdered snow. This will help to cushion the impact and prevent serious injuries. Riders use a technique known as the ollie to perform big jumps.
Step 1
Approach the ramp with a moderate amount of speed to avoid overshooting the powdered landing. Bend your knees as you approach the ramp to balance your stance. Extend your arms to your sides for increased stability during takeoff.
Step 2
Transfer your body weight onto the rear snowboard binding as you ascend the ramp. Lean onto the heel or toe edge of the snowboard to prevent unnecessary drag. Lift your front foot as you reach the apex of the ramp.
Step 3
Straighten your back leg while jumping to use the tail of the snowboard as a springboard. Raise your knees as high as possible to increase the airtime of the jump. Rotate your hands in a circular motion to maintain your balance while airborne.
Step 4
Keep the underside of your snowboard parallel to the ground as you reach the maximum height of your jump. Lower your eyes to spot a safe landing as you begin to lose altitude. Bend your knees as the snowboard sinks into the powdered snow of the landing.
Step 5
Rotate the snowboard 90 degrees with your chest pointing down the mountain. Lean onto the heel edge of the snowboard to quickly decrease your momentum. Practice the basic jumping technique before adding tricks and variations.
