Overactive bladder is a common health problem that affects people of all ages. According to the National Association for Continence, approximately one out of every five American adults over the age of 40 is affected by overactive bladder, or urge incontinence. Overactive bladder, a treatable condition, is characterized by incontinence or leaks, strong urges to urinate and increased urinary frequency. Before using marshmallow root tea to help treat your overactive bladder, review all herb-related issues with your primary care provider.
Overactive Bladder Info
Many people with overactive bladder are embarrassed by their condition. In fact, people with this condition wait, on average, about seven years before mentioning this health problem to their doctor, notes the Cleveland Clinic. Possible causes of overactive bladder include bladder inflammation, bladder stones, bladder infection or cystitis and certain neurological diseases, including multiple sclerosis. Some people with this condition may experience sexual dysfunction, due to a reduced ability to control bladder functions.
Plant Information
Marshmallow plants thrive in moist conditions, such as riverbanks and marshes. The stems of the marshmallow plant can grow to a maximum height of about 4 feet. This plant possesses long, tapered roots that are yellow in color as well as round leaves, and the entire plant contains mucilage -- a gluelike substance. Marshmallow plants flower in mid summer. The roots, leaves and flowers of this plant are used in herbal preparations and contain nutrients such as calcium, iron and magnesium.
Plant Uses
Marshmallow root has been used for numerous health purposes. This herb may be particularly helpful in treating overactive bladder caused by bladder infection, notes certified nutritional consultant Phyllis A. Balch, author of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing." This herb has been used in treating fluid retention, digestive problems, sinusitis, sore throat and intestinal ailments. A decoction can be made by mashing marshmallow root and combining 1 tbsp. of this herb per cup of water before boiling the mixture for about 10 minutes.
Disclaimer
Overactive bladder is a condition that is best managed by a licensed health care provider. If you are diagnosed with overactive bladder, review all relevant treatment approaches with your family physician, including the use of herbal remedies to resolve your health complaint. Herbs, including marshmallow root, should always be used with the same caution used with prescription drugs. Avoid using herbs in place of other more conventional treatment strategies prescribed by your primary care provider.
