Believe it or not, doing ab exercises does not take fat off your stomach. It's an old myth called "spot training" or "spot reduction." The concept is that if you want to make a certain part of your body leaner, you do exercises that target that region. Unfortunately, your body doesn't work that way. To lose stomach fat, you have to burn enough calories to lose fat all over your entire body. The most effective methods of burning fat have nothing to do with ab exercises.
Step 1
Sprint in intervals for 20 minutes three or four days per week. Sprinting burns more calories than running, jogging or walking. It also creates what's know as an "after burn" effect. That means that after you sprint, you continue to burn calories at a higher-than-normal rate because your metabolism stays elevated for several hours.
Step 2
Lift weights two to four days per week. You don't have to become a powerlifter, you just have to do some simple weight training a couple of times each week so that you build some extra muscle. The more muscle mass you have, the more calories you burn, even while your body is at rest. A simple routine you can do to get started is three sets of bench presses, three sets of shoulder presses and three sets of leg presses using a weight that you can lift eight to 12 times.
Step 3
Reduce your caloric intake. Eating fewer calories than your body needs to maintain your current weight causes you to lose fat. You can use a metabolism calculator, like the one at BMI-Calculator.com, to get an idea of how many calories you burn each day. Once you know approximately how many calories you burn, eat a couple hundred less than that each day and you will start to get leaner.
