5 Things You Need to Know About Roller Skating

1. Getting the Gear

You need to get the right gear to start a roller skating workout. To start, you'll need to pick the type of roller skates. You can choose the classic version, with two wheels in the front and two wheels in the back, or purchase a pair of inline skates. Inline roller skates are more popular today and contain four or five wheels in a straight line. After choosing your skates, you'll need to pick up your padding. Most people that roller skate wear both knee and elbow pads. If you're planning on do any stunting, you may want to wear a helmet as well.

2. Joining a Club

Many roller skating clubs offer membership to both beginner and expert skaters. If your area has a chapter of the Roller Skating Association International, you can look into joining one of their competitive teams. As a member of a roller skating team, you'll learn skill and speed drills to help you excel during competitive matches. You can also look into joining a more casual club that does not compete, but picks different area routes to roller skate as a group.

3. Going It Alone

Most people don't require lessons from coaches in order to learn how to skate. To start roller skating, you should first get familiar with your equipment. Look at your skates and locate the brakes, so you know how to stop. Once you put the skates on and get a feel for them, you can work on your balance. Head over to a flat surface, then slowly propel your legs forward. Move slowly until you feel comfortable going at a faster speed. Use your brakes to stop and try to fall on your pads if you lose your balance.

4. Skating at the Roller Rink

If you have a roller rink in your area, then you'll have no problem incorporating skating into your workout. Call to find out the hours for free skate and visit the rink during that time. Once you arrive, look for flyers for roller skating clubs, teams and lessons. Also, if you don't have your own skates, you can rent them at most rinks for a nominal fee.

5. Tricking Out on Roller Skates

As you become a better skater, you may want to find ways to physically challenge yourself on roller skates. To do this, you can try some roller skating tricks and techniques. You can race in your skates or time how long you can get from one spot to another. Some skaters put down cones and perform drills that require them to skate around the cones. You may also want to visit skate parks and try out some jumps on their ramps.
