Over the years, snow skiing has broken into a multitude of riding disciplines, including telemark, cross-country and slope style. Slope style has been embraced by the younger generation of skiers because it involves extreme tricks and adrenaline-pumping maneuvers. Slope-style riders utilize a specialized type of ski that features a twin-tip design. The twin-tip skis allow you to land spins in a fakie or backward riding stance. According to SBC Skier, your body should be parallel to the ground at the peak of your off-axis spins.
Step 1
Select a launch ramp in the terrain park that allows you to jump at least 6 to 8 feet above the riding terrain. Bend your knees while pointing the front tips of your skis towards the base of the ramp. Approach the jump at a comfortable speed to avoid overshooting the landing.
Step 2
Transfer your body weight onto your heels as you climb the ramp. Straighten your legs to jump as you reach the summit of the ramp. Rotate your shoulders as you ascend off the top lip of the ramp.
Step 3
Lean sideways to initiate your off-axis rotation. Pull your knees toward your chest to increase the height of your jump. Keep your skis perpendicular to the ground as you continue to spin.
Step 4
Lower your eyes to the ground as you begin to lose altitude. Shift your body weight sideways until the underside of your skis sits parallel to the snow. Bend your knees as your skis make contact with the riding terrain.
Step 5
Rotate the skis to a horizontal position to decrease your momentum.
Tips and Warnings
- Practice your off-axis rotations until you feel comfortable with the technique. Add variations and grabs to your off-axis spins to increase the difficulty of the trick.
