Research at Maastricht University in the Netherlands found that metabolism slows at night for most adults. Consequently, consuming food late at night can lead to weight gain. Suppressing your appetite after dinner can be difficult sometimes, but restricting your caloric intake at night can prevent you from piling on unwanted pounds.
Step 1
Consume a cup of hot or cold green tea after dinner. According to the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition," green tea is rich in antioxidants, flavonoids and caffeine. All of these help improve the synthesis of an appetite-suppressing hormone called leptin.
Step 2
Include lemon juice in your diet. Add lemon juice to a glass of cold water and salt to make a lemon drink. You can also add lemon juice to salads, sauces or meat marinades. Lemon juice contains pectin, which makes you feel fuller despite eating a smaller amount of food.
Step 3
Add garlic to your meal at dinner. Garlic contains allicin, which stimulates the feeling of satiety in the brain and reduces hunger.
Step 4
Eat potatoes at dinner. Potatoes tend to stay in the intestines longer, promoting a feeling of fullness. University of Utah professor Katherine Beals says potatoes can suppress appetite.
Step 5
Mix cinnamon into your meal to help produce smaller quantities of insulin, according to a study published in the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition." Insulin converts sugars into fat, and lower insulin means you feel fuller longer.
