While recreational skiers opt for leisurely turns and maneuvers, freestyle riders prefer to take a more adventurous approach. Freestyle skiing is an adrenaline-pumping riding discipline that involves aerial rotations and flips. The nose grab is an elementary skiing trick that can be performed off small jumps and kicker ramps. It involves gripping the nose or front end of the skis while performing an aerial jump. You can increase the difficulty of the nose grab by adding spins and variations.

Step 1

Choose a small kicker ramp, 1- to 2-feet high, when practicing the nose grab. Ski forward with your knees bent to balance your riding stance. Approach the ramp with a moderate amount of speed to avoid overshooting the landing.

Step 2

Lean back slightly as you begin to ascend the kicker ramp. Extend your legs to jump as the front end of your skis reaches the apex of the ramp. Lift your knees towards your chest to maximize the airtime of your freestyle jump.

Step 3

Extend your dominant hand forward to grab the rounded nose of the ski. Lean forward slightly to keep the underside of yours skis parallel to the snow. Lower your eyes towards the ground as you begin to lose altitude.

Step 4

Release your grip on the nose while keeping your shoulders perpendicular to the skis. Bend your knees as the underside of the skis makes contact with the ground. Practice the basic movements of the nose grab until you feel comfortable with the technique.
