Red Mango is a national chain that specializes in frozen yogurt products that are made with probiotics, the same strains of live bacterial cultures that traditional yogurt contains. Because not all frozen yogurt and frozen drinks contain probiotics, Red Mango’s products tend to be healthier than many alternatives that are produced with a lot of added sugar and artificial ingredients.

Probiotics

Red Mango products are made just as conventional yogurt is, with beneficial probiotic bacteria included. Probiotics can help with digestion and protect the digestive system from harmful bacteria. Regularly consuming probiotics may help provide relief and treatment for diarrhea, urinary tract infections, irritable bowel syndrome, intestinal infections, colds and flu.

Frozen Yogurt

According to RedMangoUSA.com, 1/2 cup of the company’s Madagascar Vanilla frozen yogurt has 80 calories, no fat or cholesterol, 105 mg sodium, 18 g carbohydrates, 2 g protein, 18 g sugar and no fiber. In contrast, the USDA notes that a typical 1/2-cup serving of vanilla frozen yogurt has 115 calories, 3 g protein, 4 g fat, 17 g carbohydrates and 17 g sugar. A half-cup of Red Mango’s dark chocolate frozen yogurt has 100 calories, 0.5 g fat, no cholesterol, 110 mg sodium, 24 g carbohydrates, 2 g protein, 23 g sugar and less than 1 g fiber.

Smoothies

Red Mango’s smoothies are made with the company’s yogurt and a variety of real fruit, but they’re much higher in calories than frozen yogurt alone. The mango banana smoothie, for example, has 430 calories, 9 g fat, 150 mg sodium, 82 g carbohydrates, 8 g fiber, 8 g protein and 47 g sugar. Along with nonfat yogurt, mango and banana, the smoothie also contains pumpkin granola and a zero-calorie sweetener.

Other Beverages

Although Red Mango is best known for its frozen yogurt and related products, the company also sells a limited number of cold drinks and other beverages. One example is the dark chocolate and banana “hot chocolate chiller” beverage, which has 420 calories, 1.5 g fat, 340 mg sodium, 99 g carbohydrates, 4 g fiber, 7 g protein and 87 g sugar in a large size.

Considerations

While Red Mango’s yogurt items may be more nutritious than similar items that don’t use all natural ingredients, it’s still healthiest to eat them in moderation. Large sizes can add hundreds of calories and dozens of sugar grams to your daily totals without offering many vitamins and minerals, so be aware of how much you’re eating when you order at the counter, and be sure that the foundation of your diet consists of whole grains, lean proteins, vegetables and fruits, as well as low-fat and nonfat dairy.
