Your body makes DHEA naturally, and scientists have figured out how to manufacture DHEA from the chemicals found in soy and yams. According to the Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database ratings system, there are several valid reasons to take this hormone. The National Library of Medicine states that DHEA is "possibly safe" when taken by healthy people for just a few months, and "possibly unsafe" when used in great amounts or for very long periods of time.
Lupus
DHEA is an important drug for people with Lupus, otherwise known as SLE. When taken with other SLE medications, DHEA reduces the number of Lupus flare-ups and decreases the severity of muscle aches and mouth sores associated with the disease. Taking DHEA may reduce the amount of SLE prescription drugs.
Aging and Bone Density
DHEA is possibly effective in slowing or reversing the aging process. Some people use it to improve the appearance of aging skin. Taking DHEA seems to thicken skin, add moisture and decrease age spots.
Bones, Muscles and Nerves
DHEA increases bone mineral density and may be an effective treatment for older men and women suffering osteoporosis. Young women with eating disorders take DHEA to increase bone mineral density lost through anorexia nervosa. This drug might benefit those suffering from Parkinson's disease.
Some athletes use DHEA dietary supplements to increase muscle mass, strength and energy. Some research supports the use of DHEA by older adults to increase muscle strength. Many people report relief from chronic fatigue syndrome after taking DHEA.
Mental Health
DHEA may be more effective in treating schizophrenia in women than in men. Some people are using DHEA to combat Alzheimer's disease and depression. Scientists are studying the correlation between DHEA loss and cognitive thinking in older adults. DHEA combats fatigue.
Men with sexual dysfunction not related to diabetes or nerve disorders take this drug to achieve an erection. Some healthy women use DHEA to increase sexual arousal. DHEA may also improve symptoms of menopause, like decreasing the severity and frequency of hot flashes. DHEA increases vaginal wall strength after menopause.
Experimental
Some hail DHEA as a wonder drug and are taking this hormone to treat a myriad of diseases and conditions. The National Library of Medicine says that there is insufficient evidence to use DHEA for many applications, including treatment of adrenal insufficiency, metabolic syndrome, weight loss and depression. While the scientific community studies DHEA's effect, many choose to take the drug to improve physical performance, fight aging or to treat serious medical conditions like AIDS, Addison's disease, multiple sclerosis, heart disease and breast cancer.
