Mobic (meloxicam) 15 mg is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with antipyretic, analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. Mobic 15 mg is administered orally in tablet form. Mobic is also available in 7.5-mg tablets and as an oral suspension (7.5 mg meloxicam per 5 mL). Mobic 15 mg is used to relieve symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (in patients over 2 years old) and osteoarthritis. Mobic 15 mg works by reversibly inhibiting cyclooxygenase-1 and 2 (COX 1 and 2) enzymatic reactions, which decreases prostaglandin synthetase.

Cardiovascular Effects

Risk of myocardial infarction, stroke or adverse cardiovascular thrombotic events are associated with this medication. Additionally, Mobic 15mg may accelerate the onset (which increases the risk for additional cardiovascular events) or exacerbate preexisting hypertension. Alternative therapies should be considered in patients with known risk factors for cardiovascular disease, and treated with the lowest effective dose of Mobic.

Gastrointestinal Effects

Risk of inflammation, ulceration, bleeding, gastrointestinal irritation and perforation of the stomach, small intestine or large intestine (can be fatal) may increase when taking this medication. Patients with a history of bleeding ulcers and/or simultaneous treatment with aspirin, corticosteroids or anticoagulants should consult with a physician. Patients who regularly smoke or drink alcohol are strongly advised to seek alternative therapies. Debilitated or elderly patients are also advised to seek alternative treatment.

Skin Reactions

Mobic 15 mg may increase the risk for adverse skin conditions including: Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS), toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) or exfoliative dermatitis. Skin reactions may occur without warning. Contact a physician if any indication of a skin rash develops.

Other Considerations

Additional side effects of Mobic 15 mg may include: acid reflux, diarrhea, gas, nausea, stomach pain, flu-like symptoms, dizziness or upper respiratory tract infection. If you are pre-disposed to allergic reactions with aspirin or any other type of NSAID like ibuprofen or naproxen, do not take Mobic. Do not take Mobic to treat pain before or after cardiac bypass surgery. Consult with a physician prior to receiving a prescription for Mobic, especially if you are pregnant or nursing.
