Finding the motivation to exercise can improve your mind and body. Even if you view exercise as work instead of play, a regular fitness routine will make you a better version of yourself. While you can find plenty of evidence to support the benefits of physical activity, you only need five good reasons to exercise for a better life.
Health
Exercise keeps your body healthy and strong. Regular physical activity prevents obesity, which can lead to such health problems as diabetes. It also lowers your blood pressure and reduces your risk for heart disease, which is the No. 1 killer in the United States, according to a 2011 feature by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Consult your physician before starting a workout routine.
Mood
Exercising releases endorphins, or feel-good chemicals in your brain. It also eases the symptoms of depression and anxiety, releases stress in a healthy way and results in a calming effect on your body. Regular physical activity promotes better sleep -- and being well rested will naturally make you feel better. Don't exercise too close to your bedtime, however, or you may struggle to fall asleep.
Appearance
People often use exercise to change or improve the way they look. Take bodybuilders, for example, who lift weights to make their muscles larger and more defined. Even if you're not a bodybuilder, exercise improves your circulation -- this leads to shinier hair and a better complexion. People who exercise regularly are more likely to have a proportioned body that matches their height and build. People who exercise age better, too.
Intelligence
Physical activity increases your brain power. While it may not directly affect your IQ, exercise can help you focus during everyday tasks. Moderate exercise also may improve your ability to process details, according to an October 2009 article published by ABC News.
Confidence
When you feel healthier, happier, smarter and better looking, you naturally become a more confident person. This added confidence may increase your ambitions, as well as your belief that you can achieve your goals. It also may help you feel more comfortable during professional and social situations.
