Costly powders and prepared weight loss juices can be expensive and often carry a barrage of warnings and side effects. Making your own natural drink to increase metabolism is simple, yet effective, and contains only wholesome ingredients that you probably already have on hand. As with trying any natural home remedy, you should consult your physician or health care professional first.

Natural Metabolism Enhancer

To make your own natural drink to increase metabolism, brew 1 cup of green tea and add 3 tbsp. of freshly squeezed lemon juice and 2 tbsp. of pure honey. You may also add fresh mint leaves to taste, if desired. Although you may consume this beverage cold, drinking it warm will enhance the effectiveness by intensifying feelings of fullness, helping to curb your appetite. The benefits of this blend will be most noticeable if you drink it six times daily, according to complementary medicine expert, Dr. Ronald Hoffman. This remedy is not intended to treat existing conditions. Consult a health care professional before trying this remedy.

Green Tea

Green tea is comprised of numerous elements that act together to increase your metabolism including caffeine, antioxidants and catechins. Caffeine alone acts to stimulate your nervous system, allowing you to burn up to 100 or more additional calories per serving consumed. It is the powerful antioxidant epigallocatechin gallate, or ECGC, though, that gives green tea even more metabolism-boosting power. In a laboratory study of non-human subjects, those who consumed ECGC on a daily basis lost up to 21 percent of their total body weight and ate about 60 percent less, according to Dr. Ronald Hoffman of The Hoffman Center.

Lemon

In addition to its natural diuretic qualities, scientific analysis has shown that the vitamin C in lemons is capable of producing a chain of chemical reactions that lead to the body's systematic use of unwanted body fat for energy, according to Dr. Carol Johnston in the "Journal of Biochemical Nutrition" in 2005. Low in calories and rich in vitamins and minerals, lemons also contain natural laxative properties that can help to cleanse and flush your body of toxins that may otherwise slow metabolic processes.

Honey

The use of honey in this drink to increase metabolism serves the dual purposes of increasing your energy while curbing your appetite to greater enhance the effectiveness of the beverage. In a study by "The American Bee Journal," athletes who consumed small amounts of honey throughout the day reported fewer dips in energy between mealtimes and those who consumed a tablespoon of honey toward the end of a small meal felt fuller and more satisfied, and thus ate less.
