Tilapia is fresh water that lives in streams, ponds, rivers and lakes. It is a very mild fish can that can take on many flavors, so it often is used in a variety of dishes. Tilapia contains omega-3 fatty acids, which contribute to a healthy heart. Panko are fine Japanese breadcrumbs that are popularly used as a breading. The panko breadcrumb fries to a crispy, golden brown texture, which makes it a natural choice for breading the light, flaky tilapia.
Step 1
Pour the milk into the large bowl. Add the tilapia into the bowl, completely submerging the fish in milk. Place the bowl of fish in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours.
Step 2
Preheat the deep fryer to 350 F.
Step 3
Pour the panko breadcrumbs onto the raised edge pan. Sprinkle salt and pepper onto the breadcrumbs and mix them well with your hands.
Step 4
Take the fish from the refrigerator to the countertop beside the pan of breadcrumbs.
Step 5
Remove a single piece of the fish from the milk and let the excess milk drip off. Coat each side of the fish with the panko. Repeat the process with the other fish fillets.
Step 6
Carefully drop two pieces of fish into the deep fryer and wait for your tilapia to float. Cook the fish for an additional minute after it has begun to float. Repeat this step with the other two pieces of fish.
Step 7
Stack four paper towels on top of the plate. Remove the fish from the fryer and place them on the paper towels to allow them to drain.
Tips and Warnings
- Lightly salt the tilapia before serving while the fish is fresh out of the grease.
- Turn off the deep fryer off immediately after removing the fish. Do not set the deep fryer close to the edge of a counter and keep it out of the reach of children.
