How to Take Psyllium Seeds

Psyllium is an annual herb native to the Mediterranean and Asia. Its seeds are glossy dark brown or black. The husks of psyllium seeds are water-soluble and indigestible in humans. Therefore, they make a good source of dietary fiber and are used in treating constipation, diarrhea and irritable bowel syndrome. Psyllium seeds lower cholesterol, are used in controlling diabetes and are indicated for lowering the risk of coronary heart disease. Dry psyllium seed products can lead to esophageal obstructions when taken without adequate fluid.

Step 1

Add ½ tsp. psyllium seeds to 8 oz. warm water.

Step 2

Mix well and quickly with a spoon because psyllium thickens rapidly in water

Step 3

Drink immediately before the mixture becomes too thick to swallow comfortably.

Tips and Warnings

  • Psyllium is recommended to be taken first thing in the morning or before bed. Take psyllium seeds 30 minutes before meals if you are using as weight loss aid. Children ages 6 to 12 should take half the adult dose. Unless instructed otherwise by a physician, start with ½ tsp. psyllium once a day before increasing to 2 tsp. psyllium in 16 oz. water per day in divided doses.
