Incessant coughing in young children can be distressing to parents. While an occasional cough does not always indicate an underlying health condition, a persistent cough may require medical intervention. Milder forms of cough can be treated at home using homemade cough suppressants, but if the coughing last for several days, it could be an infection. If that happens, consult your pediatrician, who may prescribe medications.

Mild Coughing

Step 1

Brew a tea with honey and lemon juice. Allow it to cool until it is safe to drink, and have your child drink it, one sip at a time, first thing in the morning.

Step 2

Give your child a spoon full of honey twice a day. Repeat this till you see improvement in the symptoms.

Step 3

Give your child an over-the-counter mucous-thinning agent to help suppress the cough. Use the child formula of the medicine and follow the package directions.

Step 4

Apply a topical decongestant on your child's chest and back to relieve the blockage from mucous. Again, follow all package directions.

Step 5

Give your child flavored throat lozenges to help keep his throat clear of mucous.

Severe Coughing

Step 1

Take your child to a doctor if the cough has persisted for more than a week. Find out the cause of cough and have your doctor prescribe a treatment plan.

Step 2

Keep your child warm and dry, and run a humidifier in her room.

Step 3

Give your child a lot of warm drinks, including tea with lemon and honey.
