The younger generation of snowboarders often gravitate toward an extreme riding discipline known as slope style. As opposed to more recreational forms of riding, slope style snowboarders utilize ramps to perform aerial rotations and flips. Beginners might feel intimidated when venturing into the terrain park for the first time. However, most terrain parks offer smaller ramps and obstacles for beginners. For novice riders, the Snow Professor recommends learning the jumping technique on a ramp that has a height of less than two feet.

Step 1

Aim the front end of your snowboard toward the base of the jump with your non-dominant foot in the lead position. Approach the beginner jump with a moderate speed to avoid overshooting the landing. Bend your knees slightly to ensure a balanced takeoff.

Step 2

Keep your body weight focused toward the center of the snowboard throughout your approach. Lean onto the toe and heel edge of the snowboard to avoid losing speed. Extend your arms for increased stability as you ascend the beginner jump.

Step 3

Lean onto your back foot as the front end of your snowboard nears the apex of the jump. Lift your lead foot to raise the nose of the snowboard off the ground. Straighten your back leg to jump off the tail of the snowboard.

Step 4

Elevate your knees while soaring off the lip of the ramp. Lean forward to keep the bottom of your snowboard parallel to the ground. Rotate your hands in a circular motion to avoid losing balance.

Step 5

Look toward the ground to spot a safe landing. Bend your knees as the bottom of the snowboard touches down. Practice on the beginner jump until you feet comfortable with the basic technique.
