The basis of effectively maintaining a healthy weight is an understanding of the simple equations that make up the Basal Metabolic Rate -- also know as the BMR. BMR is the amount of calories your body burns at rest. In other words, how many calories your body would burn in one day if you were to lie in bed all day sleeping. The body burns calories throughout the day regulating temperature, digesting and performing routine bodily functions. Using the BMR you can calculate how many calories you need to consume daily in order to maintain your current weight.
BMR for Women
Step 1
Multiply 4.35 by your weight in pounds.
Step 2
Multiply 4.7 by your height in inches.
Step 3
Add the sum of Step 1 and Step 2 plus 655.
Step 4
Multiply 4.7 by your age in years.
Step 5
Subtract the number in Step 4 from the sum of Step 3.
Step 6
Calculate your caloric by multiplying your BMR by one of the following factors depending on your activity level. If you are sedentary and perform little to no exercise, multiply your BMR by 1.2. For light daily activity multiply by 1.375, moderately active by 1.55, active by 1.725 and extremely active by 1.9. This is the number of calories that you need to consume daily to maintain your current weight.
BMR for Men
Step 1
Multiply 6.23 by your weight in pounds.
Step 2
Multiply 12.7 by your height in inches.
Step 3
Add the sum of Step 1 and Step 2 plus 66.
Step 4
Multiply 6.8 by your age in years.
Step 5
Subtract the number in Step 4 from the sum of Step 3.
Step 6
Make the same caloric calculation outlined for women in Step 6.
