It seems appropriate that a game that is played predominantly with your feet, such as soccer, begins with a kickoff. The kickoff takes place in the center of the field, with both teams staying on their respective sides so neither has an advantage when a game restarts.

Step 1

Determine which team begins on which side and who kicks off through a referee's coin flip. The team that wins the coin flip picks the side it wants to defend first. The loser of the coin flip kicks off first.

Step 2

Line up on the half of the field you are defending. The entire team must be on the defensive side of the field, and the team that is not kicking off may not enter the center circle. The team that is kicking off may have one or two people inside the circle to kick off, with the ball located on the painted dot that signals where the center of the circle is.

Step 3

Kick the ball forward to begin the game. The ball must travel at least one rotation forward, Many teams have the player who receives the ball send it backward to begin an attack from the defense. Some teams may choose to try to catch the defense off-guard, either by shooting from the kick-off or by attacking with the two players in the center circle right away.

Step 4

Repeat the process after each goal and at the start of the second half, as well as for overtime, if necessary. The team that allows a score on kicks off after each goal, and the team that did not kick off for the first half kicks off for the second half.
