Punting is one of the least respected jobs in football. That lack of respect comes from teammates who often chide the punter and the placekicker because their practice sessions do not include any contact drills, while the rest of the team hits regularly. Nevertheless, coaches and fans know the punter has an important job. A good punter can drive the ball deep downfield and help his team win the field-position battle. Setting up a good punt with a consistent drop is a must for any punter.

Step 1

Catch the ball cleanly when the center snaps it to you. You will be standing about 15 yards behind the line of scrimmage. The center will snap the ball with speed and spin, and you must concentrate on the ball to catch it so you can drop it cleanly toward your foot.

Step 2

Extend your arms after catching the ball. If you are right-footed, hold your right hand close to the near point of the ball and your left hand close to the far point of the ball. Position your arms so they are closer to your right leg than your left. Do it the opposite way if you are left-footed.

Step 3

Take 2 1/2 steps before punting the ball. Take one step with your dominant foot and then another step with your other foot. As you take your second step, drop the ball on a line with your dominant foot. The laces should be pointing toward the sky as you drop the ball.

Step 4

Extend your foot as you bring it up to punt the ball. The best punters will make contact with the ball as their foot is about 18 inches off the ground. Follow-through with your leg as high as you can after you punt the ball. Having an accurate and well-timed drop is vital to achieving maximum height and distance.
