Vegetables can develop a frozen taste by either being stored in the freezer for too long or through overcooking. It is a common mistake to think that frozen vegetables, such as Brussels sprouts, require longer cooking times in order to thaw as well as cook; frozen vegetables are actually partially cooked before they are frozen. Therefore, following the package cooking directions is important to have tender, delicious Brussels sprouts.
Stovetop
Step 1
Pour 1 cup of water into a pot and add the amount of Brussels sprouts that you would like to cook.
Step 2
Cover the pot and bring the water to a boil over high heat.
Step 3
Reduce the heat to simmer once the water boils and allow the Brussels sprouts to cook for 6 to 8 minutes.
Step 4
Check the Brussels sprouts after 5 or 6 minutes to prevent overcooking; the sprouts are ready when they are hot and tender throughout. Remove the vegetables from the heat as soon as they are finished cooking. Serve hot.
Microwave
Step 1
Place the amount of Brussels sprouts that you would like to eat in a microwavable dish. Add ¼ cup water.
Step 2
Put the sprouts into the microwave and cook on high.
Step 3
Cook the Brussels sprouts until they are tender, hot and no longer frozen throughout the core; 8 oz. of sprouts can take approximately 5 to 6 minutes and 16 oz. may take as long as 8 or 10 minutes. Stir the sprouts halfway through the cooking process. Cut one sprout in half to determine if they are still frozen or not.
Step 4
Allow the sprouts to stand for 3 minutes after cooking and then serve immediately.
