The last thing you want when you're trying to concentrate on your skiing technique is to worry about cold feet. However, toasty toes require more than just wearing a plain pair of socks. Always make sure that your feet are dry before you put your boots on. Wet feet -- whether because of perspiration or because you accidentally stepped on the snow --- will always cause your toes to get colder.
Step 1
Wear socks from a sports store rather than a clothing store. Ski shops sell socks with a reinforced toe area, which usually consists of a thicker or doubled-up material. This will keep your toes warmer than using regular toes.
Step 2
Buy toe warmers. These disposable pouches stick to the bottom of your socks and cover the area under your toes and the balls of your feet. They last for up to six hours and can increase the temperature inside your shoes to an average of 100 degrees F.
Step 3
Try on several sizes and models of ski boots. Choose one that doesn't feel too tight, as this might cut circulation and actually make your toes get colder. A ski boot fitter, available at major sport stores, can help you choose the right boot size, which is not necessarily the same size you wear in street shoes.
Step 4
Use thermal insoles. Some are full insoles that cover the bottom of your foot completely, while others are half-insoles that stick to the top half of your sole. Thermal insoles reflect heat back into your feet or prevent it from disappearing through the bottom of your boots. Insoles come in different materials, from very thin aluminum to plastic to wool.
