How to Use Liquid Fruit Pectin for Diarrhea

Pectin is a type of fiber. It is found in the skin and flesh of fruits and vegetables. People most often use fruit pectin as a setting agent for making jelly and jam. The medical community also recognizes the benefits of liquid fruit pectin to treat diarrhea and encourage firmer stools. A study published in the November 1997 issue of "Arzneimittelforschung," found that fruit pectin allows the body to absorb excess liquid in the intestines, thus improving stool consistency and eliminating diarrhea. Fruit pectin also fights some kinds of bacteria that contribute to the development of diarrhea.

Step 1

Fill a glass with at least 8 oz. of water or juice. Juice may make the fruit pectin more palatable to children.

Step 2

Use the measuring spoon to measure the correct dosage of fruit pectin. This is usually is 1 tbsp., but follow the recommend dosage on the product label or ask your doctor for an exact dosage amount.

Step 3

Pour the fruit pectin into the water or juice. Stir for 30 seconds to dissolve the liquid pectin into the drink. If you are using water, it may appear slightly cloudy even after the pectin is fully dissolved.

Step 4

Drink the glass of juice or water. The fruit pectin will take one to two hours to take effect. Once it does, you may notice an increase in bloating or gas. Stools will become progressively firmer.

Step 5

Repeat these steps up to three times per day until the diarrhea is resolved.
