A ski lift is the mechanically powered apparatus that moves chairs up and down a ski hill so skiers and snowboarders can get to the top. Watching seasoned skiers get on and off the ski lift makes it look easy, but it does require a little technique and knowledge to do it without incident. Observing a few basic guidelines will keep you safe of the lift and allow you to enjoy your day.

Step 1

Remove the pole straps from your wrists and hold your poles in one hand. Get into the area where the next chair will come through and look behind you.

Step 2

Reach back and grasp the back of the chair as it approaches. Sit squarely in the middle of the seat if you are skiing, or lean in with one side as if sitting back on a couch if you are snowboarding.

Step 3

Pull the safety bar down over your body and relax on the way up the hill.

Step 4

Lift the bar up over your head as you get to the top of the hill. Watch where the lift chairs turn away so you know where to get off.

Step 5

Point the tips of your skis or your board up into the air just before you get off the chair.

Step 6

Place the board or skis on the snow and stand up when you are ready to go. Glide off the chair and out of the way of the next chair behind you.

Tips and Warnings

  • Ask the workers at the bottom of the hill to slow down the lift for you if you feel it's too fast. Bring everything with you such as gloves, poles and goggles when you get off the lift at the top. Make sure none of your clothing is stuck in the metal bars or chair before exiting the lift.
