Zyflo CR (generic name: zileuton) is a medication used to prevent such asthmatic symptoms as difficulty breathing, wheezing, coughing and chest tightness, says MedlinePlus. Zyflo is a leukotriene synthesis inhibitor that blocks an inflammatory substance called leukotriene in your body. Leukotriene is responsible for producing mucus, swelling and constriction in your airways. Zyflo CR is available as a tablet that is usually taken two times a day.

Common Side Effects

Drugs.com says that Zyflo's most common side effects include such flu-like symptoms as cough, fever, headache or nasal congestion. It can also cause difficulty breathing, stomach problems, chest tightness, wheezing, and eye or cheekbone pain.

Concerning Side Effects

Zyflo's most serious side effects include extreme fatigue, nausea, vomiting and dark urine, says Medline Plus. It can also affect your skin and cause it to turn yellow and become itchy. In some cases, Zyflo can cause a skin rash, hives and stomach pain.

Mental Side Effects

Zyflo can affect your personality and may cause you to be agitated and irritable, says Drugs.com. In some instances, Zyflo can provoke severe depression (feelings of sadness and hopelessness) that may transform into suicidal thoughts. If left untreated, you may seriously harm yourself. According to MedlinePlus, you can also experience anxiousness, abnormal dreams and hallucinations (psychiatric condition where you hear and see things that aren't present). Call your doctor if you experience these personality changes.

Other Possible Side Effects

Drugs.com states that other side effects may include poor appetite, irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias), hyperventilation and tremors of your hands, feet, legs or arms. Trouble sleeping and concentrating are other possible side effects.
