Side Effects of Ultram

Ultram, the brand name for tramadol, is an oral analgesic used to treat moderate to severe pain. The medication is available only with a physician's prescription. While Ultram is not a narcotic, it works similar to a narcotic medication in the body. The medicine is available in a tablet form for dosing as needed for pain. As with all medications, some side effects may occur while taking Ultram.

Common Side Effects

There are common side effects people experience when taking the pain reliever Ultram. Gastrointestinal upset, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and constipation, may occur. A decrease in appetite may also affect an individual taking the medication. In addition to stomach troubles, dizziness, feeling drowsy, difficulty with going to sleep or staying asleep, blurred vision and generalized weakness are common. An individual may also experience flushing of the body while on the medicine.

Severe Side Effects

Some less common and more severe side effects of Ultram include chest pain, erratic heart rate and a weakened pulse. Severe neurological side effects may include disorientation, fainting, mood swings, depression, seizures and a disturbance in the coordination in motor movements. Additional areas of the body that may experience severe side effects of this medication include problems urinating and skin that blisters and peels.

Emergency Situation

After taking Ultram, an allergic reaction resulting in anaphylactic shock can occur. The symptoms of an allergic reaction include, but are not limited to, chest pain and pressure, hives, edema to the airway, face or mouth, and itchy skin. These symptoms require emergency medical attention to prevent permanent damage or death.

After Discontinuing Medication

Additional side effects may occur after the Ultram has been discontinued. Some of these unwanted effects include high blood pressure, enlarged pupils, stomach cramping, an increase in sweating and yawning, diarrhea and shivering.
