List of Herbal Male Enhancers

Multitudes of medications exist to help men achieve an erection and enhance their sexual performance. For men looking for an alternative to prescriptions, herbal options may be appealing. They are both readily available and moderately inexpensive, when compared to their prescription counterparts. Herbs like yohimbe, ginseng and epimedium are sold over-the-counter for male enhancement.

Yohimbe

Yohimbe is an herb derived from the bark of the West African evergreen tree. Traditionally, the herb was used as a remedy for fevers, coughs and leprosy. Taken during fertility celebrations, the herb's ability to enhance male performance is not a new discovery. While scientific evidence is scarce regarding the effectiveness of yohimbe for male enhancement, the herb is believed to increase blood flow to the genitals, elevate mood and improve sexual performance. Yohimbe is also used by bodybuilders, to help build muscle mass by increasing testosterone production. Side effects include increased blood pressure and tachycardia (rapid heartbeat). Taking the herb may also worsen some medical conditions like mood disorders and kidney disease, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Ginseng

Ginseng is a well-accepted Chinese herb, available in several varieties. White ginseng is unprocessed; red is considered more potent and is preserved with steam. Wild ginseng is the most costly, as it is rare. In all varieties, the ginsenosides present in the herb give it its medicinal characteristics. The herb is often brewed as a tea, but is available in many other preparations for increased energy, endurance and stress reduction. According to the Mayo Clinic, some studies of American and Asian ginseng show possible benefits for those with erectile dysfunction. While generally considered safe, the herb may interact with certain medications, such as antidepressants (MAOI).

Epimedium

Epimedium, also known as horny goat weed, is an herbal remedy used for centuries in Chinese medicine. As a modern alternative to prescription drugs, the herb is sold as a male enhancement supplement, available in combination formulas containing other herbs. By raising low levels of testosterone, the herb epimedium may help increase libido, though there is little evidence to support the safety and effectiveness of the herb, according to the Mayo Clinic. Breathing difficulties may occur in high doses.
